Job overview

The post holder will work to meet the objectives of the Pathology Directorate and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He/she will contribute towards the departmental commitment to provide an efficient, cost effective, timely and high quality fit-for-purpose Cellular Pathology service to the Trust.

The Cellular Pathology Quality Lead will support the Cellular Pathology Manager in developing and implementing systems to promote and encourage continuous improvement in practice within Cellular Pathology in relation to quality management, clinical governance and risk management. The post holder will work alongside other section leads on the effective implementation of ISO 15189 and the maintenance of the quality management system under these standards

The Cellular Pathology Quality Lead will support the Cellular Pathology Manager in developing and implementing systems to promote and encourage continuous improvement in practice within Cellular Pathology in relation to quality management, clinical governance and risk management. The post holder will work alongside other section leads on the effective implementation of ISO 15189 and the maintenance of the quality management system under these standards

Working for our organisation

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Pathology is a clinical support service. Medical and scientific staff within Pathology provide diagnostic and clinical advice to surgeons and clinicians within the Trust and to General Practitioners within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre area. The department has UKAS accreditation and is also accredited to train Biomedical Scientists and Junior Doctors.

The department has a strong user focus and a proven track record in developing new services to meet the changing demands of our clinicians and patients. This focus, allied to the regional specialist services, gives real opportunities for staff to train and develop in a supportive and educationally challenging environment.

We are currently working with our three neighboring Trusts to form a Lancashire and South Cumbria Pathology partnership.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Support the management of reporting and outcomes of incidents and errors. Analyse and report data and trends.
  • To be responsible for investigating complex incidents and errors with responsibility for analysing probably root cause and generating options for corrective action.
  • To champion the cause for high levels of incident, near miss and concern reporting, ensuring that staff are aware of their duty to report.
  • To develop and write policies and protocols for the quality management system in Cellular Pathology and support the implementation of these.
  • To be responsible for supporting other section leads with writing and implementing new policies and protocols
  • To ensure that incident trend and theme information has pragmatic and achievable actions in place to enhance practice and reduce the risk of a repeat of the trend or theme identified

Qualification and training

Essential criteria
  • MSc or equivalent experience
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • MIBMS or FIBMS
  • Managerial training
  • Qualification in Quality Management

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist experience of Cellular Pathology
  • Extensive experience and understanding of audit.
  • Extensive experience and understanding of incident management.
  • • Experience and understanding of ISO 15189 standards and implementation of these standards in practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Trust administrative procedures
  • Experience of delivering training.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of highly specialised cellular pathology procedures and instrumentation.
  • • Health and Safety skills and knowledge of legislation.
  • • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Good general IT knowledge and understanding of Pathology IT systems.
  • Experience of having a lead role in UKAS assessments.
