Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ideally situated just a forty five minute drive from Manchester. The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology patients. We employ more than 6,500 staff, have approximately 900 beds and have a planned turnover in excess of £410m for 2017/2018.

As one of the United Kingdom’s largest coastal resort, Blackpool has plenty to offer its residents – it’s not just a good place to work; it’s a great place to live. In addition to its bustling centre and historic seafront, the town is world famous for its many attractions, including the famous Blackpool Tower. Blackpool also offers a number of scenic cycling routes round our local parks and across the surrounding countryside, as well as boasting panoramic views of the coast on its picturesque Promenade. Further afield, Blackpool also benefits from less than three-hour connections via rail to Edinburgh in the north and London in the south.

Our strategic vision for 2020 is:

As a high performing Trust, operating as part of an integrated care system, we will provide high quality, safe and effective care. This will be achieved in a financially sustainable way, through our skilled and motivated workforce”.

Health Mentors provide staff, patients and visitors with information on how to lead healthier lifestyles, typically on the topics of; tobacco use, alcohol use and healthy weight (including exercise) visiting people on the wards and in waiting areas. Health Mentors are trained to give very brief interventions and to use motivational techniques to encourage people to make healthier behaviour choices. Health Mentors are equipped with information on local community based specialist services and with permission, will signpost people for additional support (e.g. Blackpool Healthier Lifestyles Service and Smokefreelife Blackpool). Health Mentors are not able to provide individualised or tailored advice to people.

Health Mentors also organise and attend promotional events in the Hospitals main entrance promoting National public health campaigns such as Stoptober, Nutrition and Hydration week and others.

All volunteers will complete a six week trial as an opportunity for them to check if they will enjoy volunteering, and for us to assess the suitability of their voluntary role. At all times volunteers will be expected to:
 Participate in appropriate training required by the Trust, the Voluntary Services Department and the respective area;
 Promote a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere;
 Offer a smile to everyone and engage in friendly and appropriate conversation with those people who would like to talk;
 Demonstrate respect and sensitivity to all individuals, ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times;
 Refer individuals to the appropriate member of staff where necessary;
 Engage in any other appropriate activity under the guidance and support of a member of staff
