Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ideally situated just a forty five minute drive from Manchester. The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology patients. We employ more than 6,500 staff, have approximately 900 beds and have a planned turnover in excess of £410m for 2017/2018.

In partnership with the University of Cumbria, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is offering secondments to Registered Nurses who wish to advance their academic knowledge and professional skills to expert specialist level within District Nursing. 

The degree programme aims to enable Registered Nurses to attain the competency and expertise as Specialist Practitioners defined by the NMC. Emphasis is placed upon the development of critical and analytical skills with a reflective approach to professional practice. 

The District Nursing CSP Programme has been planned and developed in conjunction with Managers, Professional Educational Facilitators, Practice Teachers and previous students providing a unique programme that is high quality and contemporary, reflecting the rapidly changing environment within the community. The programme equips practitioners to critically examine and reflect, encouraging each student to develop as adaptable and responsive leaders and innovators in order to improve quality of care to patients/clients within District Nursing.

The programme is 50% theory undertaken at Lancaster campus and 50% practice within one of three community localities in Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You will practice under the supervision of a qualified Community Practice Teacher across the Lancaster, Morecambe and Fylde Coast Localities

The programme can be studied at BSc (Hons) if the student has a Diploma, Graduate Diploma if the student holds a degree and wishes to study again at level 6 or at Post-Graduate Diploma if the student holds a degree (1st or 2:1 classification) and wants to advance to level 7 (Master’s level)

Successful students will have a specialist practitioner qualification [recorded/registered] with the NMC

The programme utilises an integrated theory and practice approach that will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for safe and effective specialist practice to patients/clients, as well as the confidence to deliver higher level clinical decision making, make consistent developments and advancements in clinical healthcare, and drive through strategic or operational change with District Nursing.





Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 1.6 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

  • Accident and Emergency at Blackpool Teaching Hospital.
  • Community Midwifery and Women and Children’s Services.
  • Clinical research with an 80-strong team of nurses and doctors.
  • Community nursing and school nursing.
  • Recovery and rehabilitation for a variety of conditions including brain injury, stroke and elderly care.
  • Sexual health and family planning services.
  • Wellbeing and lifestyle including mental health services, heart health campaigns, and smoking cessation services.
  • End of life and palliative care.

Between April 1 2014 and March 31 2015 we treated 100,662 day cases and inpatients (elective and non-elective), 329,257 outpatients and had 83,303 A & E attendances. The total number of community contacts was 1,228,494.

The Trust houses a state of the art Simulation & Skills Facility that provides training for all grades of staff to improve the safety and quality of the service that we offer our patients.

We run a portfolio of in-house courses that can be accessed by all staff to enhance their professional development needs. The training is supported by the use of modern equipment including part task trainers for such skills as venepuncture and full body manikins for the practice of emergency drills.
